Day 1: The port, the historic heart of Hamburg

Go to the Landungsbrücken, Sankt Pauli's "unloading docks". This is the best way to approach Hamburg's coastline. A stroll on the pontoons and quays, herring tasting and a boat tour of the harbour: they are available all day long from the Landungsbrücken. The boat will take you through amazing landscapes through cruise ships, container fields, shipyard cranes and unloading platforms. In the evening, a hamburgish fish dinner or why not a Portuguese one in one of the many restaurants near the Landungsbrücken.

Day 2: Discover the port life

Steps: Hambourg

Discover the Speicherstadt, the "city of warehouses", with its canals and 19th century brick buildings that still house carpet and spice shops freshly unloaded from boats. This is the location of the historic port of Hamburg. Visit of themusée des Épices. Eel lunch in Deichstrasse, a pretty historic canal street near the Speicherstadt. Return to the city of warehouses and visit the Musée de la Mer, one of the most captivating museums in the city. Discover the HafenCity, which extends the city of warehouses, an ultramodern district with its new marina, the philharmonic on the banks of the Elbe and its maritime terminals. On the way back, coffee tasting in a former coffee shop, the Kaffeerösterei.

Day 3: A day to the rhythm of the boats

Back to Landungsbrücken. Visit of the Rickmer Rickmers RickmersA historic sailing ship transformed into a museum, a testimony to the navigation of the end of the 19th century. Alternatively or in addition, you can visit the MS Cap San DiegoA cargo ship also transformed into a museum that plunges into the world of industrial navigation. You can then take a HAVAG ferry (same status as a bus or metro). Direction: theport-musée d'Övelgönne, downstream on the Elbe, with a very romantic atmosphere, which houses about twenty old boats, one of which has been transformed into a museum. A stone's throw away is the pretty beach on the Elbe, where all Hamburg flocks in fine weather, nestled in a small corner of greenery. You can then walk along the Elbe quay to the "Balcon d'Altona", from where you can enjoy the most beautiful view of the port and Hamburg. Return by ferry to Landungsbrücken, where you can also discoverAlter Elbtunnelthe first tunnel dug for pedestrians under the Elbe to access the port.

Day 4: A Sunday dedicated to maritime gastronomy

It has to be a Sunday! From 5 a.m. you can reach the beautiful fish market of the Sankt Pauli Fischmarkt, where lively concerts are held and beer flows freely! The night owls of Sankt Pauli finish their Saturday evening there until noon. Around the hall, the picturesque fish market is the most typical of its kind in the whole city. Nearby, you should also visit theU-Boota submarine transformed into a museum. Then, from the HafenCity or Landungsbrücken, you can take a half-day cruise on the Elbe estuary to the sea itself. Unless you prefer the canals and the inner lake of the Alster, which shows Hamburg as a small Geneva, where you can also do somesuperbes croisières.

Day 5: Escapade on the shores of the Baltic

Day trip to Travemünde, a prestigious seaside resort on the Baltic Sea north of Lübeck, 1h15 by train from Hamburg's Central Station. In summer, you can rent yourself a chair and parasol typical of the northern seaside resorts and enjoy the soft waters of the Baltic Sea. In winter too, walking on the elegant beach and enjoying the lively atmosphere of the seaside can be the subject of a very beautiful excursion. Small markets are often held on the quay where festive entertainment is often required. Alternatively, if you are more interested in the North Sea, the small town of Glückstadt, built by the Danes downstream from Hamburg on the estuary, offers a picturesque setting and a very distinctive port atmosphere.
