Practical information : Going out Brazil
Timetable
Brazil has a reputation for being a party country. And this reputation is far from usurped. At Lapa in Rio, Savassi in Belo Horizonte, Rio Vermelho in Salvador or Vila Madalena in Sampa, the party is in full swing at the heart of the night. The notion of nightclubs or clubs is a rather broad and variable concept, and it's sometimes difficult to differentiate between music bars and nightclubs. In all of these places, bands perform with spectators who dance and sing along. Nightclubs and music bars often open from 8pm and usually close on Mondays. On weekends, they stay open until very late. You'll find every musical genre(sertaneja, MPB, electro) and mood (alternative, rock, LGBT...).
There are cinemas and other cultural venues, but they are less popular than in France, except in the big cities, like Circo Voador in Rio, for example.
Budget & Tips
Entrance fees rarely exceed R$60 or R$100 (apart from very select clubs). Credit cards are accepted in most establishments.
To be booked
As club capacity is limited, we strongly advise you to make reservations for special evenings with well-known singers, bands or DJs.
Night transport
The metros in the various cities generally start operating at 4.30 or 5 a.m. and stop around midnight or 0.30 a.m. Remember, nights are not very safe in Brazil, and public transport is frankly not recommended. The night owl's best friend is the cab. You can either take the cab waiting near your establishment, or the one you've arranged to be called. Night fares are a little higher, but that's the price you pay for a safe return.
Age restrictions
Brazilian law prohibits minors from frequenting establishments selling alcohol. The legal age of majority is 18, as in France.
What's very local
As is the case everywhere, and even if Brazil conveys a relaxed image, dresscode must be in keeping with the places frequented. The select venues in Rio and the metropolises, frequented by the happy few, require a certain sophistication; otherwise, elegant casualness is the rule.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited in enclosed establishments open to the public. As in France, you'll have to smoke outside.
