England is a familiar country, which we feel we know well. However, as soon as you get there, you can already see his spécificités qu' a tourist guide to England will not fail to highlight: the grass is very green, the sheep numerous, you drive on the left... Because England cultivates its differences jealously, proud of its traditions and its insularity. England still has a certain sweetness of life, this charm " cosy ", a little old-fashioned, to which we often associate it. Bucolic, elegant and modest, the English countryside, particularly in Yorkshire and Kent, has inspired many painters and writers. In addition to the moorland landscapes, wild coasts and national parks suitable for hiking, there are many historical testimonies. England is full of castles (Leeds Castle, Warwick Castle...), cathedrals (Salisbury, Canterbury...) and museums (Tate Modern, Madame Tussauds...). But Britain is far from falling asleep on its past. It is home to several vibrant cities, London, Liverpool, the city of the Beatles or Manchester, home of Oasis, with an intense cultural life, restaurants of all kinds, a lively nightlife... The must-see attractions such as the British museum, the Buckingham Palace, the Westminster Palace or the London Tower await you!

What to visit England?

When to go to England?

Although the commonplace wants it to always rain in England and the territory does not lend itself to seaside resorts, it should be noted that the country enjoys several climates depending on the geographical area. In any case, it is better to have a good sweater and a windproof jacket all year round so as not to be surprised. As a general rule, summer is the best time to travel to England. Avoid the winter and mid-season if you plan to enjoy the countryside. On the other hand, for lovers of " sensations fortes " and nature, winter is the best time to contemplate the power of the natural elements, especially in the Highlands: under the rain and wind, the coast is magnificent, the colours sumptuous... and the few tourists, except of course during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Weather all year round

It does not rain every day in England. Winter is often cold and wet, with temperatures ranging from 1 to 6°C. When the sea is warmer than the land, temperatures do not fall below zero degrees. Rainfall varies slightly from region to region, for example, it is higher in Devon than in London. In the summer, the temperature can reach 22°C, but remember to bring warm clothes for the evening, as the temperature drops. Spring and fall are unpredictable months in England.

Budget

The currency is the pound sterling. The Brexit shock in June 2016 caused the value of the pound to fall, which is influenced by announcements and negotiations. Going to England is relatively expensive and the trip will not be economical. However, while prices are high, there are disparities between cities such as London or Oxford, and those such as Liverpool, Manchester or Leeds, where the cost of living is significantly lower. A trip to England, however, is always in the high price range when you want to visit the country of Queen Elizabeth II. Going shopping in the shops of these big cities will not be without consequences for your travel budget. Fortunately, pubs are well established and a drink with friends will not cost you more than in France.

Procedures

To stay in England, it is sufficient for the European national to hold a valid identity card or passport. Under-18s travelling without their parents must be in possession not only of a valid identity card or passport, but also of a permit to leave the country issued by their police station or town hall. Non-European tourists will have to apply for a visa: check with the authorities in your country.

Health

In England, sanitary conditions are generally good and hygiene is respected in the majority of establishments. Tap water is drinkable. European tourists will benefit, under the aegis of the National Health Service (English social security), from free treatment in the event of an accident or emergency, on presentation of their passport or identity card. Social protection is provided by municipalities, sometimes jointly with local NHS providers and agencies. First check that the hospital or doctor is dependent on the NHS. Remember to take the European Health Insurance Card (care in EU countries) with you from your health insurance fund. This will facilitate care in the event of on-site care. EU nationals can benefit from free care by being temporarily registered by the doctor consulted on the NHS register.
