The garden of Ireland
Three quarters of an hour's drive from the city center, the Wicklow Mountains promise a great escape and a breath of fresh air. These low-lying mountains are crossed by winding roads through forests, streams and fields populated by flocks of black-headed sheep. Pause at Powerscourt garden, beautifully laid out around a castle with a breathtaking view of the Wicklow Mountains. The route continues to Glendalough, the starting point for walks of varying lengths around its lakes. Amateur photographers will no doubt appreciate Glendalough Cemetery, with its tall, narrow stone tower set among round tombs and dolmens.
Dublin by the sea
In the Boyne Valley
Head north to the Boyne Valley, site of the Battle of the Boyne, which saw the Protestants defeat the Catholics in 1690. This valley is rich in Celtic sites, including Hill of Tara, a pagan site of which almost nothing remains, and the Unesco World Heritage-listed Neolithic sites of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth.
Cliffs of Moher
Two options for this ninth day: return to the west of Ireland, to discover Cliffs of Moher and enjoy the superb coastline once again, or head north. In Northern Ireland, you'll discover Giant's Causeway and its volcanic formations, as well as Belfast, a city with a fascinating - and very recent - history.
