How to get there

Steps: Munich

This first immersion begins with a relaxed stroll through the heart of the city, simply to soak up the atmosphere of Munich. Start at Karlstor, then walk down Neuhauser shopping street to Marienplatz, the town hall square. On the way, take time to admire the interior ofMichel Church at 52 Neuhauserstraße. Stop for lunch at a pastry shop on Marienplatz and, if you arrive before noon, stand in front of the Town Hall carillon to see its little figures emerge. From Marienplatz, continue along Dienerstraße, then Residenzstraße, towards the museum. Visit the Treasure Room. Walk to the beautiful Odeonplatz, and admire the majesty of the building, with its architecture worthy of the greatest capitals. Return via Theathinerstraße and Weinstraße and take a look at the luxurious boutiques.

Munich/city center

Steps: Munich

From Marienplatz, head towards Isartor via the Viktualienmarkt. Spend some time strolling through the market, inhaling the smells, popping into the delicatessens and, if you're already hungry, grabbing a snack from an Imbiss. After the Isartor, walk to the Ludwig Bridge, overlook the Isar River and look towards Museum Island. Spend some time at the Deutsches Museum für Wissenschaft und Technik (first hour free of charge), choosing in advance the area you're most interested in - it's gigantic. Retrace your steps and return via the Sendinger Tor, and be sure to visit theAsam Brothers Church!

Day 3

Castles of Nymphenburg (botanical garden passage) and Amalienbourg

Accessible by streetcar and bus if you don't want to take the car. You'll need to devote the whole day to it, especially in fine weather. Visit the châteaux à la carte and enjoy a bucolic stroll through the park. Lunch on site or picnic on the lawns.

Munich/Direction Hofgarten and English Garden

Villa Waldberta

Steps: Munich

Starting point, the Cuvilliés Theatre. Discover the back of the Residenz and its garden, then continue to the English Garden. Climb the embankment to the Monopteros temple for a view of Munich' s spires and a look at the Japanisches Teehaus. Dine in a Biergarten. In the afternoon, why not stroll along the banks of the Isar, especially in summer? Since the major works undertaken to make the riverbanks more accessible, Munich's residents never tire of spending their weekends fishing, playing sports and, above all, enjoying an aperitif along the river. And it's not impossible to come across nudists.

Dachau

Located some twenty kilometers from Munich, the Dachau concentration camp memorial provides visitors with an insight into the horrors of war and the Holocaust. Tours are available in German and English, and cost around 2 hours 30 minutes and €3 per person.

Ammersee lake

Steps: Munich

Take a two-day tour of Bavaria's lakes, starting with Ammersee, a 1-hour drive from Munich. Trains can also take you there. Perfect for swimming, boating or simply strolling. Spend a night on the shores of the lake to make the most of the atmosphere.

Day 7

Starnbergersee lake

Continue your escapade around the lakes with a visit to Starnbergersee, just an hour from Lake Ammersee. Hiking, lounging or visiting Possenhofen Castle, where Sissi the Empress spent part of her childhood, will provide something for everyone. And, once again, sleeping on site will only enhance your trip.

Oktoberfest (if in season) or Hellabrun zoo

Steps: Munich

A day of fun for the kids and yourself. Immerse yourself in the Oktoberfest atmosphere, stroll around the huge fairground and have a beer with the locals. Treat them to a day at the zoo (6 km south of town). Spend the morning at the Pinakothek, then head for Schwabing to discover one of Munich's most emblematic districts, immersing yourself in the young, student atmosphere as you walk up the impressive Leopoldstraße to Münchner Freiheit.
