Day 1: The center of Vilnius

Steps: Vilnius

Start your visit in Cathedral Square, which you'll recognize by its imposing French classical style. Climb through the park to the Gediminas Tower overlooking the square. At the top of the tower is a belvedere offering a beautiful panorama of the city. Then take Gedimino prospektas, the Lithuanian "Champs-Élysées". Here you'll find the Museum of the Victims of Genocide, more commonly known as the "KGB Museum", a moving reminder of the hell of political prisoners under Soviet occupation. After strolling through Gedimino, leave Cathedral Square and head up Rue Pilies, a street full of restaurants and cafés, where you can take a break on one of the terraces. Continue your ascent along rue Didzioji, which leads to thetown hall square. From the square, you'll seeSt. Casimir's Church, recognizable by its crown-shaped steeple and its pink color. Walk past the Hotel Astorija up to the Porte de l'Aurore.

Day 2: Vilnius east side

Steps: Vilnius, Panevėžys

Start the day by visiting Sainte-Anne's church with its red brick facade. Behind it is the set of churches of Les Bernardins. Cross the river and then venture into the "Republic of Uzupis", a bohemian artists' district nicknamed the "Little Montmartre". Climb to Basteja, and let yourself be seduced by the view. To the north of the city, don't miss the church of Saints Peter and Paul. Its interior offers one of the best examples of Lithuanian Baroque. In the late afternoon, you can go to the television tower. From there, you can admire Vilnius and its surroundings, and have dinner or a drink in the restaurant.

Day 3: Trakai

Steps: Trakai

Trakai is a small town 28 km from Vilnius, famous for its lake and fortified castle, and was for a time the capital of the Duchy of Lithuania. The program includes a visit to the castle, the Karaite Ethnographic Museum and the Museum of Sacred Art to learn more about this Lithuanian minority. If the weather is fine and warm, you can swim in the lake or hire a boat for a trip along the water.

Day 4: Kernave

Steps: Vilnius, Kernavė

Situated 40 km from Vilnius, this small village has a sublime setting with the Neris valley and its many hills. After a tour of the village and the former kolkhoz, it's time to take to the paths for a short walk, or even a picnic, in an exceptional natural site, listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Day 5: Kaunas

Steps: Kaunas

Kaunas, the country's second-largest city and former capital between the wars, is well worth a visit. Its old town, castle and pedestrian street are very pleasant. Its museums are well worth a visit, particularly the Pharmacy Museum and the picturesque Devil's Museum.

Day 6: Rumsiskes

Steps: Monastėre De Pažaislis, Rumšiškės

Before visiting Rumsiskes, a visit to the baroque monastery of Pasaislis is a must. From here, take the boat across the man-made lake to the open-air Rumsiskes Ethnographic Museum. It's a great way to discover the traditional architecture of the country's four main regions.

Day 7: Back to Vilnius

Steps: Klaipėda, Druskininkai

If cities aren't your thing, another itinerary might be worth considering: discovering the Neringa peninsula, via Klaipeda, instead of staying in Kaunas. Or, closer to home, if you're short of time, the Aukstaitija park with its many lakes is a good idea. If relaxation is on your agenda, Druskininkai is the place to go for a spa treatment, even if only for a few days.
