Practical information : Sightseeing Netherlands
Timetable
Museums in major cities usually open from 10am to 5pm, with one nocturne a week, often on Thursdays. Always check museum websites. The following are public holidays:
january1st.
Easter Sunday and Monday.
april 27 (national holiday, King's Day).
Ascension Thursday.
Pentecost Sunday and Monday.
december 25 and 26.
Many museums and attractions are open and accessible on public holidays, with the exception of Christmas and King's Day (national holiday). On these days, it's best to plan ahead and make reservations to avoid unpleasant surprises.
In the countryside, attraction opening times can vary enormously depending on the season and the day of the week. It's not uncommon for some attractions in the countryside to be open from 12pm to 4pm, and only at weekends.
To be booked
It's advisable to book exhibitions and events well in advance.
For the Anne Frank House, you'll need to book a month in advance. The major museums also offer time-slot tickets.
Keukenhof tickets are very popular, and you'll need to book well in advance.
You can still book tickets at most ticket offices, but they will often be slightly more expensive.
Budget & Tips
For Amsterdam, the I amsterdam card is recommended if you're planning several visits.
In Rotterdam, the Rotterdam Welcome card is a must, and also includes transport.
Guided tours
The museums all offer guided tours, but these are often in English. If you'd like a tour in French, you'll need to make arrangements in advance.
Many city tours are by bike or on foot. Some are themed and include visits to bars and restaurants.
Tourist traps
There's no need to be carried around town in horse-drawn carriages or tuk-tuks. And if you're cycling, just go with the flow.
