Practical information : Eating out Canary Islands
Timetable
As in the Iberian metropolis, restaurant opening hours are different from those in France. It is from 2 to 4 pm for lunch, the most important, comida fuerte, and from 9 pm for dinner. Restaurants are often closed on Sundays and Mondays. Better to book at noon if you wish to get a place on the terrace to have a nice view. In the evening, Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest nights for refuelling.
Budget & Tips
The menu del día, a daily menu offered for lunch on weekdays (around 10 €) is also available in the Canary Islands, but especially in the cities. You will find it less, if at all, in tourist places. Without being the Mecca of tapa, a small snack accompanying a drink, the Canary Islands are gradually adopting it. But above all offer many dishes to share (from 12 to 15 €) and as the plates are very copious, you can make a meal for about 15 €. At a good table, in the evening, the bill will be between 25 and 30 €.
What costs extra
Prices are all-inclusive. But bread and water are not included. No carafe, just bottled water, con gas or sin gas, still or sparkling. And bread is billed at €1 to €1.50, generally presented with cutlery in a basket. If you don't want bread, just say no when asked, or indicate so when ordering. But as far as water is concerned, a new law has come into force. From January1, 2023, all establishments (bars, hotels or restaurants) must offer free water from the tap. This measure is designed to limit the proliferation of plastic packaging.
Smokers
After a transition period of a few years, with smoking and non-smoking areas, Spain has been implementing a smoke-free law since 2011. All the establishments are therefore non-smoking, except on the terrace.
Tourist traps
You won't find a reaper in the Canary Islands, as many tourists visit the islands in organized groups, with meals already included in the "tour". On the other hand, it is better to avoid establishments that are too close to a very touristy place such as the paseo de playa blanca in Lanzarote, as an example. It is more the realm of the frozen food, which is also becoming more and more important. To be more relaxed, ask for the fish of the day, classically fresh.
