Close to Germany and Switzerland, with which it is closely linked, Mulhouse is an astonishing city that is very industrial! For a long time a city-state and then an independent republic, it was only (voluntarily) attached to France in 1798, before quickly becoming one of the first industrial centers of Europe, a period of which it still retains many traces today. A Mulhouse tourist guide will tell you all about it: after the spinning mills, the mining industry and the electrical industry, it was the turn of the automobile industry to develop. Today, the PSA Peugeot-Citroën group is the largest employer in the region with its plant in Sausheim. If your visit is to last only a few hours, concentrate on the Place de la Réunion in the historic city center. Must-sees are the town hall (which houses the Historical Museum), the Saint-Etienne temple, some beautiful houses, such as the Mieg house, the Lys pharmacy, as well as the old fortifications and their various towers. If you have several days or already know the city, opt for a visit to one of the main museums, such as the Cité de l'automobile, the Cité du train or the EDF-Electropolis museum, for example. You can also visit the PSA Peugeot-Citroën assembly lines.
When to visit Mulhouse ? You can visit Mulhouse all year round. Dressed warmly in winter, and a little more lightly in summer, you can walk around the city. If you are a fan of vintage cars, you can visit the biggest car museum in the world, in Mulhouse! Fans of trains? Don't miss the Cité du train, the largest railway museum in Europe, open since 1971, which tells the story of the railroad, from the first racks to the TGV. Other museums will also welcome you all year long. In December, don't miss the very nice Christmas market on the Place de la Réunion which gives the city a charming atmosphere.
Mulhouse's climate is semi-continental, between the oceanic climate of the West and the continental climate of the East. It is characterized by very cold winters and hot and stormy summers. The protection of the Vosges mountains to the west causes a föhn effect: precipitation is low and the temperature differences between summer and winter are significant. The south of the agglomeration is more humid because it is located opposite the Belfort gap.
