Practical information : Sightseeing Alaska

Timetable

The opening hours fluctuate enormously from one season to the next. Many of the establishments are even closed except in the summer, opening only at the end of May and closing at the end of September. Those that are open all year round have reduced opening hours in winter because of the presence of darkness all day long (museums can be open from 1pm to 4pm, for example), whereas in summer, with the daylight hours and the number of visitors, the opening hours can be extended. Make sure you get all the information you need before you go anywhere.

To be booked

The Anchorage-Fairbanks locomotive train, or Anchorage-Seward in the summer, is a very popular option for transportation and especially for sightseeing. It is therefore necessary to reserve your place in advance.

Budget & Tips

Alaska is an expensive destination and there is no real free admission, museums are quite expensive.

Main events

The Iditarod (www.iditarod.com) is the largest dog sled race in the world and it takes place in Alaska. It is an important event not to be missed. The start is given in Anchorage at the beginning of March.

Guided tours

We particularly recommend taking free guided tours with Denali National Park rangers. They are scheduled in advance and all you have to do is register.
