The 2nd district which is found north of the Old Port has four official neighbourhoods: Arenc, Grands Carmes, Hotel de Ville and La Joliette. This district covers the oldest parts of the Phocean City, like the district of Panier and its narrow streets. Some old buildings have particularly been well restored such as the Hotel-Dieu or the diamond House. The new port of Marseille, whose construction began in the 19th century, is situated north of the 2nd district. The business district of La Joliette-Arenc, which was built in the 1990s as part of the Euroméditerranée project, is also situated in this region. More recently, in 2013, the famous MUCEM, the museum of civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean, was inaugurated on the former J4 port pier. Its design architecture which faces the sea fits perfectly in the landscape of Marseille. Today it is a flagship museum in Marseille offering a multidisciplinary vision that combines anthropology, history, archaeology and contemporary art and which aims to show the different facets of the Mediterranean region.

What to visit Marseille?

When to go to Marseille?

The best time to go to Marseille is in the spring or fall, during the low season. Hotel and restaurant rates are much lower than in summer during this period and the beaches are almost deserted. As for the climate, it is ideal, warm but not too hot, and you can often swim from spring and sometimes until the end of November in autumn. Winter is the very low tourist season but the climate remains mild with the possibility of doing many hikes under the sun. The high tourist season is of course the summer, in July and August, the roads are crowded and the prices easily go from simple to triple. It is then necessary to book early if you want to have a place and not to lose all your savings. Marseille is indeed a city that is becoming more and more touristic and it is not only popular with the French but also with a great number of foreign tourists. If you go to Marseille in the summer, it is a good time for outdoor festivals and you can easily find a complete list of these festivals at the tourist office.
